Gotcha Day and Pet Birthday Ideas (Safe for Dogs and Cats)
A gotcha day is the anniversary of the day you adopted your pet. The best way to celebrate it, or a birthday, is with what your dog or cat already loves: their favourite walk, a new toy, a long play session, a small treat made for pets, and a photo to mark the year. Keep human party food away from them: the ASPCA lists chocolate, xylitol (a sweetener), grapes and raisins, onion and garlic, macadamia nuts and alcohol among the foods to avoid, and the FDA warns that lilies in a bouquet are very dangerous for cats.
In brief
- Your pet doesn't know the date. The celebration is for you, so plan it around what calms or delights them, not around a party.
- One special moment is enough: a new trail, a game, a puzzle feeder, a nap in the sun together.
- For food, keep it small and plain, and check every ingredient of a "pet cake".
- Start a yearly tradition: same spot, same pose, one photo per year.
Gotcha day or birthday?
Many adopted pets have no known birth date, so families celebrate the day the pet came home instead. Others celebrate both. There's no rule: pick the date that means something to you, write it in your calendar, and keep it each year.

The "pet cake": ingredients to keep out
A tiny treat is fine for most pets, but party food is where accidents happen. Here is what the ASPCA's Animal Poison Control lists among the people foods to avoid, and why:
| Ingredient | Why it's a problem (ASPCA) |
|---|---|
| Chocolate, coffee, caffeine | Can cause vomiting, abnormal heart rhythm, tremors and seizures. The darker the chocolate, the higher the risk; baking chocolate and cocoa powder are the worst. |
| Xylitol (sweetener in some gum, candy, baked goods and peanut butters) | Can cause low blood sugar and liver damage. Read the label of any peanut butter or "sugar-free" product. |
| Grapes and raisins | Can lead to kidney damage in dogs. |
| Onion, garlic, chives | Can damage red blood cells. Cats are more sensitive, but dogs are at risk too. |
| Macadamia nuts (and fatty nuts in general) | Macadamias can cause weakness, tremors and vomiting in dogs; other nuts are very fatty. |
| Alcohol and raw yeast dough | Alcohol is toxic; raw dough can rise in the stomach and also produce alcohol. |
| Milk and dairy | Pets don't digest lactose well: it can cause diarrhea. |
| Very salty food | Can cause vomiting, tremors and, in large amounts, worse. |
For cats, also watch the flowers. The FDA explains that lilies of the "true lily" and "daylily" families are very dangerous for cats: the whole plant is toxic, pollen included, and can cause kidney failure. Keep them out of any bouquet in a home with a cat.
If your pet eats something on this list, call your veterinarian or the nearest emergency clinic right away. Note what was eaten and how much. This guide is general information, not veterinary advice; ask your vet before giving a new food to a pet with health issues.
Keep it calm
- Few guests. Many pets find a crowded room stressful. One or two people they know is plenty.
- No costumes they don't accept. If they freeze, hide or try to remove it, take it off.
- Watch the wrapping. Ribbons, strings and small pieces of a toy can be swallowed. Put them away after the gifts.
- Keep the routine. Same meal times, same walk, same quiet place to retreat.
A gift for someone else's pet
Invited to a friend's dog's birthday, or a first gotcha day? A toy sized for the pet, a puzzle feeder, a photo session or a donation to the shelter in the pet's name are safe bets. For someone who just adopted, our gifts for a new puppy or kitten owner list what helps in the first weeks. For a dog lover in general, see 25 gift ideas for dog lovers.
A keepsake for the first year
For transparency: this guide is published by Chibiyo. We make chibi-style figurines of one pet from photos, about 8 to 10 cm, printed in Québec and packed in a gift box with the pet's name ($89 CAD, shipping included in Canada; founders' price $79 for the first 100 figurines). If your pet is still a puppy or a kitten, waiting until their adult look is set gives a figurine that matches them for years. AI helps us draw the chibi version and build the 3D model. A person checks every model, and you approve the preview before printing.
FAQ
What is a gotcha day?
It's the anniversary of the day a pet was adopted and came home. Many families celebrate it instead of a birthday, especially when the pet's birth date isn't known.
How do you celebrate a dog's birthday at home?
Give them one special moment they enjoy: a new walk, a new toy, a game or a small treat made for dogs. Keep guests few and the routine normal. A yearly photo makes it a tradition.
Can dogs eat birthday cake?
Not a regular cake. Human cakes often contain chocolate, sugar substitutes like xylitol, raisins, dairy or fat, which the ASPCA lists among the foods to avoid. A tiny treat made for dogs, in their usual amount, is safer.
How do you celebrate a cat's gotcha day?
Cats prefer calm: a long play session with a wand toy, a new box to explore, a puzzle feeder with their usual food. Keep lilies and other toxic plants out of the house.
What can I give a friend for their pet's gotcha day?
A toy sized for the pet, a puzzle feeder, a photo session, or a donation to the shelter the pet came from, in its name. A personalized keepsake works well too, if you can get a good photo of the pet.
