Holiday Gifts and Tips for Dog Walkers, Sitters and Groomers

The usual holiday thank-you is up to one week's pay for a dog walker and up to the price of one session for a groomer, in cash or as a gift card, always with a short handwritten note (Emily Post Institute). For a pet sitter there is no fixed rule: Care.com suggests $50 to $200 US depending on how often they come. A small personal gift is a nice extra, not an obligation.

Sources checked October 7, 2026. Emily Post and Care.com are American etiquette guides; we found no Canadian guide specific to holiday tips for pet care. Québec figures come from Protégez-Vous and SOSgarde (2026). A tip is always at your discretion.

How much to give, by role

Who Usual holiday thank-you Gift idea (our suggestions) Better to avoid (our advice)
Dog walker Up to one week's pay, or a gift (Emily Post). Care.com: $50 to $200 US depending on frequency. Touchscreen winter gloves, hand warmers, a gift card for a coffee shop on their route. Another dog item, or anything bulky to carry on walks.
Pet sitter (regular) $50 to $200 US depending on frequency (Care.com, 2026). A restaurant gift card, local treats, a photo of the pet with a thank-you note. A gift that needs space or care (a plant, a pet).
Occasional sitter (holidays, vacations) No published standard. Our suggestion: the price of one visit or one day of sitting (estimate). A card and a small local treat. Feeling you owe a big amount: a sincere note already counts.
Groomer Up to the cost of one session, or a gift, if the same person grooms your pet all year (Emily Post; Care.com). A good hand cream, a gift card. Scented products if you don't know their tastes.
Dog daycare staff Care.com: a handmade gift or baked goods for the staff. Something to share with the whole team. A gift for only one person when a team cares for your dog.

What that means in dollars in Québec

  • Dog walker: in Québec, a 30-minute walk usually costs between $16.60 and $25 (SOSgarde, May 2026). One week of weekday walks is therefore about $83 to $125 (our calculation: 5 walks).
  • Groomer: the holiday guideline is the price of one grooming. During the year, Protégez-Vous suggests a 10% tip for a dog groomer, or more if the job is demanding (Protégez-Vous, May 2026, in French).
  • Pet sitter: the $50 to $200 US range is American. Adjust it to how often they come and to your budget.

Cash, gift card or gift?

  • One or the other is enough. Emily Post notes you never have to give both cash and a gift.
  • Always add a note. "Any gift or tip should always be accompanied by a short handwritten note of appreciation. (Two or three sentences will be enough.)" (Emily Post)
  • Already tipping at each visit? Emily Post says you may skip the year-end tip or give a more modest holiday thank-you.
  • On a tight budget? Emily Post says you shouldn't feel obligated to go beyond your budget: consider a homemade gift, or simply words of thanks.
  • When to give it: at the last visit before the holidays, so they have it before Christmas.

Card wording you can copy

Write it by hand, sign it with your pet's name as well as yours:

  • "Thank you for every walk this year, rain or snow. Biscuit waits for you at the door every day. Happy holidays! — Biscuit and Julie"
  • "Thanks for taking such good care of Mochi while we were away. Coming home to a happy, calm cat was the best gift. — Mochi and the Tremblay family"
  • "Every time Pixel comes back from the groomer, he looks like a new dog (and he knows it). Thank you for your patience with him all year. — Pixel and Marc"

A gift from the dog itself

For transparency: this guide is published by Chibiyo, a small shop in Québec (currently in pre-launch). One idea for a walker or sitter who adores your dog: a chibi figurine of the dog they care for every day, "signed" by the dog. Ours are about 8–10 cm, 3D-printed in PLA with up to 4 colours, made from one sharp photo of the face, and cost $89 CAD with free shipping in Canada (founders' price: $79 for the first 100 figurines, at the latest until November 30; regular price after that: $89). We ship within Canada only; for Christmas, order by December 1. AI helps us draw the chibi version and build the 3D model. A person checks every model, and you approve the preview before printing.
